How to Care for Your Silk (Without Making It Complicated)

Cool water, a gentle wash and a shady drying spot. Silk care can be pleasantly simple.

Silk care sounds like it should involve a special room and a very patient person. For a scrunchie, it can be much simpler: a small bowl, the right detergent and a few gentle movements.

The aim is to clean the fabric without giving it unnecessary heat, rubbing or twisting. Always follow the instructions supplied with your piece; different silk items can have different care needs.

The simple TSV scrunchie care routine

  1. Use cool water. Fill a clean bowl or basin. Wash colours separately, particularly when they are new.
  2. Add a little silk-safe detergent. Follow its dilution instructions and check that it explicitly suits silk.
  3. Gently move the scrunchie through the water. Do not scrub the folds or stretch the elastic to clean them. Keep the wash brief rather than soaking for hours.
  4. Rinse gently in cool water. Remove detergent without twisting or wringing.
  5. Press in a clean towel. Reshape gently, then lay flat to dry in the shade.

Which detergent should I use?

Choose one labelled for silk and follow the product directions. “Gentle”, “sensitive” or “natural” on the front of a bottle does not automatically make it suitable for every delicate fibre.

Avoid bleach and harsh stain treatments. Skip improvised vinegar mixtures and other home experiments unless your item’s maker specifically recommends them. Your scrunchie does not need a chemistry project to get clean.

Handwashing or the washing machine?

Our catalogue care instructions recommend cool handwashing for TSV scrunchies. A silk setting on your machine does not override those instructions. The elastic, stitching and gathered construction need consideration as well as the outer fabric.

For another silk item, such as a pillowcase or garment, check that item’s own label before choosing a wash method. “Silk” is not one universal laundry programme.

Drying: give heat the afternoon off

Do not tumble dry TSV silk scrunchies or place them on a radiator. Avoid leaving them in direct sun or a hot car. Let them dry fully before wearing them again or putting them into storage.

Drying time will vary with humidity and airflow. Queensland weather has its own opinions, so judge by the fabric rather than the clock.

How often should I wash a scrunchie?

There is no single timetable for everyone. Wash when it needs freshening after wear, sweat, hair products or visible marks. Rotating between a couple of pieces lets one dry properly while you use another.

For exercise, a Thin duo gives you two matching pieces to rotate. That convenience is not a reason to store a damp one in the bottom of a gym bag.

Store it ready for its next outing

Once completely dry, keep your silk in a clean drawer or pouch away from rough jewellery, hook-and-loop fasteners and sharp edges. A zipped travel pocket works well if it is clean and dry. Avoid permanently stretching it over a large bottle or handle.

The mistakes worth skipping

  • Wringing the fabric like a wet tea towel.
  • Using heat to hurry drying.
  • Leaving sweat or styling-product residue to build up.
  • Putting it away while damp.
  • Assuming every delicates detergent or machine cycle is silk-safe.

Care reference

TSV product care instructions take priority. Tide’s fabric-care guide also emphasises following the care label and treating delicate fabrics gently.
